The University of Abuja has been renamed to Yakubu Gowon University, a decision that President Bola Tinubu has approved. This change came about during a recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, aimed at honoring General Yakubu Gowon—Nigeria's former military leader and a respected elder statesman.
In announcing the decision, Information Minister Mohammed Idris noted that renaming the institution recognizes Gowon's substantial contributions to Nigeria's unity and stability. Moreover, this move coincides with Gowon's recent 90th birthday celebration; thus, it further emphasizes the significance of this tribute.
The FEC articulated that this gesture intends to acknowledge Gowon's enduring legacy and pivotal role in shaping the nation's history. However, the proposal will now be submitted to the National Assembly for formal approval, which is necessary to finalize the process.
