Abia Airport: Deputy Speaker Kalu Commends President Tinubu and Federal Government on South-East Development. The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed his commendation for President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for their focus on advancing the South-East region's development, particularly through the upcoming construction of the Abia Airport, which is scheduled to begin next Tuesday.
In a statement released by Levinus Nwabughi (the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker), Kalu characterized this initiative as a crucial measure intended to address the region's infrastructure deficit.
“The Abia Airport project is a testament to the Federal Government's commitment to bridging the infrastructure gap in the South-East,” Kalu remarked. He further pointed out that this airport will not only stimulate economic activities in Abia State but also enhance connectivity and facilitate trade throughout the region.
The Deputy Speaker’s comments came in response to Governor Alex Otti’s clarification during his December media briefing, wherein he stated that the Abia Airport is indeed a federal project, with the state government lending support.
Kalu, who represents the Bende Federal Constituency, played a crucial role in facilitating the project at the federal level before he presented the concept to Governor Otti. The Governor subsequently elevated the project from a mere airstrip to a fully operational airport.
Kalu expressed regret about his inability to attend Tuesday's groundbreaking ceremony due to the presentation of the 2025 national budget; however, he emphasized the robust collaboration between the state and federal governments. He reaffirmed his commitment to attracting projects that are oriented toward the needs of the people in Abia.
Additionally, the Deputy Speaker extended his gratitude to President Tinubu for approving the airport initiative and for establishing the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), both of which he characterized as essential to addressing economic and infrastructure challenges in the region. He assured the public that these initiatives are in line with the President's broader economic strategies for Nigeria.
