PRESIDENT TINUBU'S GAZA ADDRESS

During the Saudi-led Arab-Islamic Summit convened to address the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, President Tinubu called for an immediate cessation of Israeli military operations in Gaza, emphasizing the necessity of a two-state solution.

In his remarks, President Tinubu articulated profound concern regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. He stated, "The conflict in Palestine has endured for far too long, inflicting immense suffering."

He further asserted, "As representatives of nations that uphold justice, dignity and the sanctity of human life, we bear a collective moral duty to bring an end to this conflict." He elaborated, "Mere condemnations are insufficient.

The world must take action to halt Israeli aggression in Gaza, which has persisted excessively. No political goal, military strategy, or security objective should come at the expense of so many innocent lives."

Additionally, he pointed out, "In a rules-based international order, self-defense is a recognized right. However, it must comply with principles of proportionality, in accordance with global legal, diplomatic and moral standards."

He concluded, "A civilian population, along with its aspirations and futures, should never be relegated to mere collateral damage."

This is not merely a diplomatic position; it represents a vision grounded in equality and mutual recognition. Achieving this vision necessitates dialogue and a respect for historical context. This conflict (which certainly did not originate on October 7, 2023) demands principled compromise.

The visceral nature of this historic conflict generates far-reaching divisions; however, the constant circulation of violent images on billions of devices around the world deepens these divides. We urgently need new avenues to peace. Our experiences, both domestically and regionally, remind us that identity politics cannot supplant respect for the nuances of diversity, he stated.

Although the journey toward reconciliation may be challenging, open dialogue is essential to fostering understanding. He concluded that the international community now has an opportunity to apply fresh perspectives to this longstanding conflict. It is our duty to engage in this dialogue with genuine commitment, acknowledging the complexities on all sides.
