Tinubu's Government begins sale of 50kg rice at ₦40,000 amid nationwide protests
The Federal Government announced on Monday that it has commenced the distribution of an additional 10 trucks of 50kg rice to each state, to be sold at designated centers for ₦40,000.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) emphasized that there is no need for the planned nationwide protest, as most of the organizers' demands are being addressed. President Bola Tinubu stated that he is already addressing the youth's grievances ahead of the August 1 protest.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, briefed State House correspondents after the Council meeting, explaining that the distribution of rice aims to alleviate poverty and the high cost of living. He remarked, "The FEC believes most of the protesters' demands are being met by the federal government, making the protest unnecessary. This is a listening government."
"The President has heard those planning the protest and assures them that there is no need for it. He is already advocating for them by implementing measures to improve their concerns, such as ensuring food availability. Recently, we announced the distribution of 20 trucks of rice to state governors for those in need. Additionally, rice is now being sold at about half its cost, with a 50kg bag available for ₦40,000," Idris added.
