Newspaper vendors in Enugu are voicing their concerns about the detrimental impact of online media on their businesses.
Mr. Emmanuel Okeke, a seasoned vendor with over three decades in the industry, described the situation as dire. He stated, "I've been in this business for over 30 years, built a house with it, and raised my family through it, but I've never seen it this bad."
He noted that the decline began with the rise of online media, as readers shifted to consuming news on their mobile phones. "I used to receive 500 copies of the newspaper and would often sell out by the end of the day. Now, I receive fewer than 100 copies, and 70 percent remain unsold," he said.
Okeke further explained, "People no longer buy hard copies unless they need to publish an advertisement or a change of name. The current economic hardship has worsened the situation, as people prioritize spending on food over newspapers. It’s that bad."
