ENVIRO CRIME TRIBUNAL ESTABLISHED

The Federal Government is actively working to establish a tribunal dedicated to prosecuting individuals who commit environmental crimes across the nation.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, during a stakeholders' meeting on Thursday in Abuja, in observance of World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th.

Expressing concern over the widespread unsustainable environmental practices in the country, Lawal attributed these issues to the inadequate enforcement of current environmental regulations.

"Currently, because we are not being strict, you find that environmental cases are not being handled as they should be," Lawal stated. "We are working hard, and very soon the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) will introduce new laws to protect our environment, forests, and local areas against pollution."

"We are going to establish a tribunal to expedite the prosecution of environmental crimes, and we need the AGF's support to do so. I urge stakeholders to assist us in enforcing existing environmental laws, as we aim to enhance the legal framework protecting our environment."
