STATE ELECTORAL COMMISSIONS SCRAPPING

The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Gagbemi, highlighted the necessity of abolishing State Electoral Commissions, identifying them as the main barriers to the advancement of local governments.

Speaking at a one-day event in Abuja on Monday, he addressed the challenges affecting Nigeria's national security and the governance of local governments.

“To address this issue, many experts have suggested the need to dismantle the State Independent Electoral Commissions. Their responsibilities and authority should be transferred to the Independent National Electoral Commission, as the state commissions are seen as extensions of the incumbent governors. This is viewed as the root cause of the problems plaguing local government administration in Nigeria,” he stated.
