CEASEFIRE PLAN FOR GAZA

Today, President Biden proposed a clear, realistic, and just plan to establish an immediate ceasefire and end the war in Gaza. This plan ensures Israel’s security, facilitates the return of hostages taken on October 7th to their families, increases aid into Gaza, and alleviates the suffering of Palestinian civilians. It also involves engaging Israelis, Palestinians, Arab countries, and the broader international community in the process of rebuilding Gaza.

While a ceasefire alone won’t heal the deep pain of Israelis whose loved ones were killed or abducted by Hamas, nor the Palestinians whose families have been devastated by the subsequent war, it can halt the ongoing bloodshed, help reunite families, and allow a surge of humanitarian aid to reach those in desperate need. It can save lives immediately and lay the groundwork for a long and challenging journey towards a future where Israel is secure and at peace with its neighbors, and Palestinians attain the security, freedom, and self-determination they have long sought.

As the tragedy in Gaza has unfolded over the past eight months, we’ve seen a fierce public debate, both domestically and internationally, about how the United States should respond. Regardless of individual positions in these broader debates, an enduring ceasefire is something we should all support—for the sake of Israelis, Palestinians, and the world at large. I am deeply encouraged by the relentless efforts of President Biden, Secretary of State Tony Blinken, and our diplomatic team to bring this terrible war to an end.
