Chimamanda Adichie, during her inaugural lecture at Princeton University, expressed her frustration and anger over the 2023 Nigerian elections, which led her to write an open letter to President Biden, highlighting the election irregularities. In her lecture, she emphasized the importance of telling the truth about recent history and how she wanted to bear witness to the events.
During the lecture, Adichie introduced Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, as the winner of the presidential election. She also discussed her writing career, the influence of the Catholic Church on her work, and her inspiration from her great-grandmother, known for being a troublemaker in her time.
The lecture was part of the annual series initiated by Prof. Chika Okeke-Agulu and the Program in African Studies at Princeton, aimed at showcasing prominent African voices to the world. Next year's lecture will be delivered by Abdulrazak Gurnah, Africa's 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature winner.
