The Department of State Services (DSS) has established the Directorate of Public Relations and Strategic Communications (DPRSC) as part of its commitment to engage with the public, enhance democratic governance, transparency, and accountability. Dr. Peter Nnochirionye Afunanya, who previously served as the Public Relations Officer, has been appointed as the pioneering Director of the DPRSC, effective from September 26, 2023. This initiative has received commendation from the Director General of the DSS, Alhaji Yusuf Magaji Bichi CFR, for his forward-thinking approach.
Dr. Afunanya brings a wealth of experience, spanning over two decades, encompassing various domains such as intelligence analysis, security administration, VIP protection, investigations, counterterrorism, and more. He holds a Ph.D. in Security and Strategic Studies from Nasarawa State University, a Master's degree in Peace and Strategic Studies from the University of Ilorin, and a Master of Arts degree in English Language from the University of Uyo. His educational journey started at Abia State University, where he graduated with Second Class Upper Division in English Language in 1997. He has also received prestigious awards, including the President's NYSC National Honours Award for Outstanding Performance.
Throughout his career, Dr. Afunanya has undertaken numerous leadership and intelligence management courses, both domestically and internationally, including programs at Harvard University, City University in London, and training in Switzerland. He has held various positions within the DSS, including his previous role as Public Relations Officer. Additionally, he has served on the Board of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Sub-Committee of the Presidential Transition Council. Currently, he is a member of the Strategic Communication Inter-Agency Policy and Coordination Committee (SC/IPCC) within the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
Dr. Afunanya is a Fellow of the Security Institute (FSI) and a member of numerous professional organizations, such as the Society for Peace Scholars and Practice (SPSP), Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NiCarb), and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR). He is also an avid photographer, golfer, volleyball player, and enjoys storytelling and writing poetry/short stories. Married with children, he is known for his dedication to his community and his commitment as a team player.
