BENIN PROTESTS AGAINST PRESIDENT (VIDEO)

In the Republic of Benin, there have been widespread demonstrations demanding President Patrice Talon's resignation. These protests were ignited by Talon's decision to seek re-election, despite his previous commitment to serving only one term. The opposition is urging him to step down to uphold his promise and prevent "complacency," advocating for one-term limits for future presidents.

Security forces responded aggressively to the protests, deploying soldiers who fired shots and water cannons at demonstrators in the capital city, Cotonou. This unrest led to property damage and arbitrary arrests. Tragically, the situation escalated to the extent that one person lost their life, and six others were wounded by gunfire in central Benin. Despite this turmoil, Talon was re-elected in 2021, and the nation's political stability remains precarious.
