WILLIE OBIANO RELEASED FROM EFCC CUSTODY

Chief Willie Obiano, the immediate-past governor of Anambra State, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), over a week after he was arrested by the anti-graft agency while attempting to board a flight to the United States.

Last weekend, the Commission rejected Obiano administrative bail, but on Monday, it reversed its decision and granted him bail with strict terms.

Obiano was detained by the EFCC after failing to meet some of the requirements, while his friends and allies tried unsuccessfully to gain his release.

Concerned about the situation, the leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) met with some Anambra State leaders to intercede.

Obiano was said to have finally met the requirements on Wednesday evening, following which he was released to his family members.

His international passport has apparently been taken in order to prevent him from fleeing the country. He will also be required to report to the anti-graft agency's office on a regular basis for further questioning.

When Obiano was governor of Anambra State for eight years, he is accused of embezzling billions of naira from the state.
