After Dr. Omololu Olunloyo was declared the Governor-elect of the old Oyo state in 1983, the bigwigs of NPN came to Aipate Baptist Church, Iwo to dedicate their victory to God.
They were hosted by a respected and celebrated leader and politician, Prince Alade Lamuye of blessed memory, who was a close friend and political associate of my late father Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode Q.C. S.A.N CON.
The Pastor, Rev. Gbemi Otolorin, who is still alive today and who I will respect forever said the following in his sermon. He said, "if this victory is of God, it will last. But if not, it will not last".
A few days later the voice of Brigadier Sani Abacha was heard over the radio sacking all those who were purportedly elected by VERDICT '83 and subsequently General Muhammadu Buhari became the Head of State.
I learnt a big lesson from that incident and given the events of 23rd February 2019, I believe that that lesson is more relevant today than ever before. And as I remember the words of Rev. Gbemi Otolorin, I speak the same words to President Muhammadu Buhari, who has just "won" his presidential election, courtesy of INEC.
I say that if his "victory" is of God it will stand and it will last but if it is not of God it will not stand and it will not last. The fundamental and basic lesson of history, tried and tested over the centuries and confirmed by the holy scriptures, is that "all power belongs to God" and that "heaven rules in the affairs of men and forges the destiny of nations".
This deep and profound truism, which is utterly lost on most of our leaders and politicians, is worth pondering on. In addition to that we must also remember that "destiny speaks at the end".
Let us see how this one will end. Whichever way it goes we can be rest assured of the following: God is in control and His counsel alone shall stand.
