The Niger State Police Command has arrested one Ikechukwu Okwor of Gwada in the Shiroro Local Government Area of the state for alleged possession of illicit drugs.
The suspect was apprehended by the operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Minna, on December 21, 2018, after executing a search warrant on his chemist’s shop at Gwada.
It was learnt that Okwor had been under the police radar for some time on suspicion of selling illicit drugs to youths in the Gwada community.
Northern City News gathered on Thursday that the suspect had allegedly been involved in the illicit drugs business for over six years.
Checks revealed that the suspect had been fingered as the brain behind the distribution of large volumes of illicit drugs in Shiroro and other parts of the state.
He confessed to our correspondent that he joined the illegal drugs trade right from his days as an apprentice.
Okwor explained that he rose through the ranks until he became a major distributor of illegal drugs across the state.
The suspect said, “A fellow apprentice introduced me to the business when I was asked to deliver goods to prospective buyers. As time went by, I started selling little of these (illicit) drugs to members of the public and made money with ease.
“I was always in my shop where my customers usually come to visit me for the drugs. At a point, the business boomed to the extent that I stopped selling normal drugs in my shop and concentrated on the illicit ones.
“I have been in this business for years. I have built a house and own several other properties from the money realised from it. I have agents everywhere who run around for me and I was paying them monthly until I was arrested.”
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, who confirmed the development, described Okwor’s arrest as another milestone achievement in the fight against illicit drugs.
Abubakar said the operatives recovered from the suspect 28 cartons of codeine, Dizapan, Ezol-5, Nitrozapan maga and Refinor, adding that the suspect would soon be arraigned in court.
